When people picture homelessness, they usually imagine a man on the street with a cardboard sign. What they don’t see is the full story behind that moment the trauma, the breakdown, the system that failed, the person that fought.
They don’t see the young people who spent years moving from care placement to care placement until the only place they felt safe was the pavement.
They don’t see the kids sofa surfing to stay warm or the mothers hiding in abusive relationships because the streets are worse. They don’t see the people who work but still can’t afford to live.
When we sleep out, we can only begin to imagine what it must be really like for those that are forced to sleep rough every night.
By coming together, we can start to turn understanding into action. We can challenge the stereotypes, break the silence, and make sure that no one has to face homelessness alone.
What we do is just a small pebble in a vast ocean, but that pebble always creates a ripple effect.
