Street Paws – Keeping People and Pets Together Through Homelessness
For many people experiencing homelessness, the bond with a pet is a lifeline. Pets provide comfort, routine, and unconditional companionship in situations that can otherwise feel isolating and unstable. But when housing is limited, that bond is often put at risk.
Street Paws works to protect this connection. Founded in 2016, they provide free veterinary care and support for pets belonging to people experiencing homelessness across the UK. Their aim is simple: to make sure people are not forced to choose between safe shelter and staying with their pet.
Too often, that choice becomes reality. Many hostels do not accept pets, and people are asked to give them up in order to access accommodation. For some, that means refusing support altogether and remaining on the streets rather than being separated from a companion.
Street Paws responds to this gap between animal welfare and human homelessness services. They work directly with individuals, offering essential veterinary care and practical support to keep pets healthy and safe. Alongside this, they help hostels move towards becoming pet-friendly, providing training and resources so more accommodation can accept animals in future.
Demand for their work continues to grow, driven by rising housing pressures and reduced availability of suitable accommodation. Each case reflects a wider issue, where homelessness and pet ownership collide in difficult and emotional ways.
By keeping people and pets together, Street Paws supports wellbeing on both sides of the relationship. For many, that connection is what helps them cope, stay grounded, and keep going through uncertain times.
