I have lived in Leicestershire for over 40 years and built and sold our family business just before Covid, luckily. However, my wife got bored and started another business selling affordable Ergonomic Chairs to those with back issues and I find myself doing her books and delivering a few chairs now and then.
What are some of your driving values?
I thrive on being busy and productive. After eleven years as Vice Lord-Lieutenant I have met some truly inspirational, wonderful people and charities across the piece, and my aim is to help where I can add value.
You’ve always been great at giving back, why is it important to you?
I have been a member of various military charities over the years and indeed still sit on the Army Benevolent Fund, Leicestershire & Rutland Board. I maintain a keen interest in ex-military personnel in detail but also am prepared to get out and about, rolling my sleeves up to collect funds, pick litter and generally try to improve situations where necessary.
Which causes are closest to your heart / one thing about society in the UK that you wish you could change?
I am passionate about supporting the huge number of men and women who have served their country and fallen on hard times. I wish our politicians and Government would look after their veterans better. They need and deserve help. Too many are driven to extremes after their time as the necessary levels of support are not always there.
How did you get involved in the CEO Sleepout?
As a Trustee of Leicester Tigers Foundation I was invited to join the first Sleepout and raise money for people who find themselves living rough, through circumstances not always in their control. I heard some harrowing tales from those who were in such circumstances and determined to help where I could.
What other ways do you "give back" or work to strengthen communities you work within?
My wife and I support a number of Charities either financially or by giving our time. We find it immensely rewarding and wish we could do more.
Name one thing you'd like people to know about your life and work:
I like to think I have time for anyone who needs it.
How might you see business playing a part in creating a fairer society here in the UK?
Obviously by supporting charities such as this one and spreading wealth either financially or by donating time and creating environments for those less fortunate to develop and flourish.
Why is it important that those in business lead with purpose?
In this country we should not be seeing people homeless or hungry. Business leaders can help by lobbying or diverting funds to Charities such as this to ensure we eradicate homelessness and hunger.
