If you are referred to a food bank isn’t just about food; it’s about not having enough money for the essentials in life.
More than 14 million people in the UK are currently living in poverty, 4.5 million of these are children. It’s simply unacceptable that we live in a society where so many people are going hungry.
The Trussell Trust supports the largest national network of food banks providing emergency food to people in crisis. Here’s how
✅ From April 2018 to March 2019 food banks in the Trussell Trust network gave out 1.6 million three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis. 500,000 went to children – A 19% increase on the previous year and a 73% increase in the last 5 years.
✅ In the last two weeks of March, foodbanks saw an 81% increase in need for emergency food parcels, including 122% more parcels going to children compared to the same period last year
✅ 94% of people referred to food banks are facing real destitution, meaning they are unable to afford life’s essentials: food, clothes, toiletries, heating, lighting and shelter. Single mothers, people with physical and mental health issues and families with two or more children are also
significantly overrepresented at food banks.
✅ Trussell Trust foodbanks are powered by 28,000 volunteers, most of whom are over 45. For many, volunteering at the food bank provides dual benefits and helps deal with other social issues like isolation and loneliness.
