UnityMK – From Emergency Shelter to Ongoing Support
Homelessness can become most visible in the harshest conditions. Cold nights and full shelters leave people with few options, often exposing the gaps in available support. What begins as an emergency response can quickly grow into something much more.
UnityMK began in 2010 as a winter night shelter in response to people sleeping rough in freezing conditions across Milton Keynes. What started as a short-term solution has since developed into a wider service, shaped by the changing needs of the local community.
Today, their work goes beyond emergency accommodation. While they still provide shelter during the coldest months, they also offer year-round support for people who are homeless or at risk. This includes help with finding longer-term housing, as well as access to welfare advice, employment opportunities, education, and counselling.
The aim is to address not just the immediate crisis, but the factors that can lead to homelessness in the first place. By offering both practical and emotional support, UnityMK helps individuals begin to break cycles that can otherwise continue.
Every situation is different. Some people need urgent shelter, while others require guidance to maintain a tenancy or rebuild stability. UnityMK works alongside each person to help them move towards a more secure and sustainable future.
