Shrewsbury Food Hub – Turning Surplus Food into Community Support
Food waste and food poverty often exist side by side. Good food is thrown away, while many people struggle to access regular, nutritious meals.
Through the work of Shrewsbury Food Hub, that gap is being addressed in a practical and community-driven way.
Across Shropshire, surplus food from shops, farms and manufacturers is collected and redistributed to local organisations supporting those in need. This includes homelessness services, schools and community groups many of which rely on this supply to continue their work.
For individuals accessing these services, the impact is immediate. It can mean a hot meal, access to fresh food, or simply the chance to sit and share food with others. These moments often go beyond nutrition, helping to reduce isolation and bring people together.
The challenges behind food insecurity are not always visible. Rising living costs, low income and wider pressures can make it difficult for individuals and families to access the basics. At the same time, community organisations are working with limited resources to meet increasing demand.
This is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It is a model built on collaboration connecting surplus food with the people and organisations who need it most, while reducing waste and supporting the wider community.
Shrewsbury Food Hub continues to expand its reach, supporting thousands of people each week through a growing network of partners.
This is not a quick fix. But through this work, food becomes more than just a resource it becomes a way to support wellbeing, strengthen communities and ensure fewer people are left without.
