MK Food Bank provides crisis food support to individuals and families in Milton Keynes. We offer two main services. The first is emergency, short term food parcels. These are bags of long-life food that provide basic meals for 3 or 4 days for people experiencing temporary financial crisis. The reasons for this are varied and can range from sickness and family crisis to debt, benefits issues and Universal Credit delays.
More recently, the soaring cost of living has accounted for a large proportion of the need. Our second service, the Top-Up Shop, was specifically designed to offer longer-term support for those people whose situations realistically aren’t going to change – the elderly and those with long-term physical or mental health issues for example. The shops sell food at a very low cost, providing choice and dignity, and aim to encourage independence and support people step by step out of poverty.
