Oasis: Supporting Survivors of Domestic Abuse
Home should be the one place where you feel safe. For many people across Kent and Medway, that safety is missing. Each year, over 1,100 adults are forced to leave their homes because staying would put them at risk. Walking away is not a simple choice, it often means leaving everything behind to stay alive.
Oasis Domestic Abuse Service supports more than 1,500 adults and 350 children every year who have experienced domestic abuse. Their work is built around a clear message: love should never come with fear.
Support begins at the first point of contact. Their helpline offers guidance when someone may not know where else to turn. From there, they provide safe accommodation for those escaping abuse, alongside therapy and mentoring to help people process trauma. They also support survivors as they begin to rebuild their lives in the community.
Children are at the heart of this work. Around 70% of those staying in refuge are young people. Many have lived with fear for a long time, often unseen and unheard. The impact can show up in anxiety, disrupted education, and a constant sense of uncertainty.
Oasis pairs children with trained mentors, giving them a safe space to talk, understand their experiences, and begin to feel secure again. Most young people report feeling more positive after this support.
Leaving abuse is only the first step. Recovery takes time, stability, and the right kind of support at the right moment. Oasis works alongside each individual, recognising that every situation is different and every journey forward looks its own way.
Their work depends on ongoing support to reach those who need it most, and to make sure no one is turned away when they ask for help.
