Billy Chip – A Simple Idea Making a Real Difference
Many people want to help those experiencing homelessness but aren’t always sure how. Giving money directly can feel uncertain, and opportunities to offer practical support aren’t always clear in everyday situations.
The BillyChip was created to change that. Inspired by Billy Abernethy-Hope, a young ambulance driver from Bristol, the idea was to create a simple way for people to offer support that feels direct, practical, and accessible.
The concept is straightforward. Members of the public can buy a BillyChip from participating cafés, shops, or outlets, and pass it on to someone in need. The person receiving it can then exchange the chip for food or a drink. It creates a clear and dignified way to give, while also supporting local businesses and charities.
Since being brought to life by Billy’s family, the initiative has continued to grow. By partnering with a wide range of outlets, from independent cafés to convenience stores, The BillyChip is expanding its reach and making it easier for more people to take part.
The idea taps into everyday habits like buying a coffee and turns them into an opportunity to support someone else. Even small actions can add up, helping provide meals while also generating funding for organisations working with people experiencing homelessness.
