Foundation of Light – Using Sport to Strengthen Communities
Across many communities, challenges like unemployment, isolation, and poor mental health can shape daily life. For young people and families, limited access to support and opportunities can make it harder to stay active, connected, and confident about the future.
Foundation of Light works with up to 20,000 people each year across the North East, focusing on some of the region’s most pressing issues. Linked to Sunderland AFC, they use the power of sport to engage communities and create opportunities that go beyond the pitch.
Their programmes bring people together through sports and fitness sessions, while also offering access to mental health resources and wider support. Based at the Beacon of Light community hub, they provide a space where individuals and families can take part in activities that improve both physical and emotional wellbeing.
The challenges people face are often connected. Social isolation, food poverty, and unemployment can all impact confidence and health. The Foundation of Light responds by offering a range of opportunities that help people build routine, develop skills, and feel part of something positive.
Support is shaped around the needs of the community, recognising that different individuals require different pathways. Whether it’s engaging a young person through sport or helping a family access support, their work creates practical ways forward.
