The Shelter MK – Supporting People Back into Stability
For people sleeping rough, the barriers to moving forward can feel overwhelming. Lack of identification, poor health, debt, or limited access to services can all make it harder to leave homelessness behind. What may seem like small obstacles can quickly build into something much bigger.
The Shelter MK provides temporary accommodation and one-to-one support for people who have been living on the streets in Milton Keynes. Since opening in 2018, they have supported hundreds of individuals, offering safe places to stay across the city.
Their work focuses on helping individuals move from crisis towards stability. Alongside providing accommodation, they offer tailored support to address the challenges each person is facing. This might include help with accessing benefits, setting up bank accounts, managing health needs, or finding a route into employment.
The support is trauma-informed, recognising that many people arrive with experiences that take time to work through. By building trust and working at a pace that suits each individual, they help people begin to see a way forward.
Every journey out of homelessness is different. The Shelter MK works closely with each person to find practical solutions that lead towards a more secure and settled life.
