I have been doing bits of work on a self employed basis since 2016 but set up the business properly with a clear ambition and focus for it in 2018.
What are some of your driving values?
Being able to make a difference to people is what drives me. Kindness, compassion, integrity, transparency and honesty are what matter and needs to be at the forefront and integral to all the work I do. See the person first in front of you.
You’ve always been great at giving back, why is it important to you?
I feel grateful for the opportunities I have had in life. Supportive and loving parents and family, a good education, good friends, health and a home over my head enable me to do what I do. If any of those are missing for people then life is that much harder and so much more difficult. My view is why can't we pay what we are lucky to have forward and help in some way.
Which causes are closest to your heart / one thing about society in the UK that you wish you could change?
For me society is and should be about community and connecting with one another. If you do not have the basics of a safe home and enough food then everything else is a challenge. Not everyone has those basics and this is the one thing I would change. Having a home, removing poverty and ensuring good health and education are the causes closest to my heart and can only improve society for the better if we can ensure people have that.
How did you get involved in the CEO Sleepout?
I saw it on Linkedin and was approached and even though I have never even camped out in my life did not have to think about it for a second. It felt like something I could do practically to help in my community and resonated with me straight away.
What other ways do you "give back" or work to strengthen communities you work within?
I undertake two unpaid roles. One a Chair of a High School and sixth form and the other as a Trustee to a charity. When there are opportunities also like CEO Sleepout that resonate with the causes that are important to me I will also get involved in whatever way I can to support.
Name one thing you'd like people to know about your life and work:
All people matter and supporting people and organisations to understand this is what both drives me. The impact you can have in this field can never be underestimated and it is rewarding and makes me feel very privileged to be able to do what I do.
How might you see business playing a part in creating a fairer society here in the UK?
Businesses can play a huge part in creating a fairer society. Providing safe workplaces is just a start, along with fair wages. However by understanding the people they work with they can also use their influence in the wider community to enhance the voice of the people and highlight what is needed so this gets taken into account for policy decisions at a higher level. They could collaborate together on areas in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility, on areas of deprivation that make it a better community to live and work in as well as fairer for the regions they are operating in.
Why is it important that those in business lead with purpose?
If leaders in business do not lead with purpose then a large part of society will be affected negatively by that. We should never forget the privilege we have and the impact we can have. We have been given an opportunity that we should not take lightly.
By participating in a CEO Sleepout event, you’ll gain insight into the big issues surrounding homelessness and what – as business leader – you have the power to change. We hope you’ll be moved to create a positive social impact in your business, adding value that strengthens communities and society as a whole.
