About Oasis
Home should be a safe place for everyone. Sadly, for thousands across Kent and Medway, it isn’t. For some, life at home becomes so dangerous that they have no option but to flee. Over 1,175 adults in Kent are made homeless in this way each year.
At Oasis we help over 1,500 adults and 350 children who have experienced domestic abuse each year. Our aim is to end violence and abuse & spread the message that Love Shouldn’t Hurt.
At Oasis we provide:
- advice and support from the start through our Helpline;
- a safe place to stay for adults and children fleeing abuse;
- mentoring and therapy for those who have suffered trauma;
- help in building a safe new life.
We work to ensure that family life is free from abuse. We provide accommodation for those fleeing from an abuser, and support adults in the local community to build safe lives.
Our work with children
Children make up 70% of those in our refuges. They are often the invisible victims of domestic abuse. Seeing a parent abused can create feelings of helplessness and fear. This can lead to anxiety, lack of concentration and poor school attendance.
“He said if she left him, he’d kill her. So I rushed home after school to check. That night I lay awake listening to the screams. I skipped school the next day just in case…”
Sadly this is a common situation for the children that we work with. We partner children and young people traumatised by abuse with a mentor who provides a safe, non-judgmental space in which to explore their experiences and build resilience. 93% of young survivors felt more positive after being supported by us.
The importance of CEO Sleepout
Each year we need to raise over £351,000 to keep supporting children and young people in Kent & Medway. It would be unthinkable to turn away a child who desperately needs our help. Through CEO Sleepout, local business leaders can come together to support and champion our work, and be there for children across Kent & Medway.
